Day 4: In Leh
After breakfast, proceed for a full-day sightseeing tour of the monasteries and palaces around Leh. Begin with a visit to Stok Palace, built in 1825 by King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal. Once the residence of the royal family of Ladakh, it now serves as the presidential palace of the descendants of King Sengge Namgyal. The palace also houses a fascinating museum showcasing royal artifacts, costumes, and treasures. Continue to Matho Monastery (Matho Gompa), beautifully set in the lap of the Himalayas. Founded in the 16th century by Lama Dugpa Dorjay, this monastery belongs to the Sakya order and is renowned for its vibrant festivals and ancient thangkas. Next, visit Stakna Monastery (Stakna Gompa) — its name literally means “the nose of a tiger.” Situated about 25 km from Leh, this picturesque monastery was founded by the Bhutanese saint and scholar Chosje Jamyang. Perched atop a rocky hill, it offers commanding views of the Indus River and surrounding valley. Conclude the day with a visit to Thiksey Monastery, one of the most magnificent and architecturally impressive gompas in the Indus Valley. Founded in the 15th century under the Gelugpa order, Thiksey’s whitewashed buildings cascade down the hillside beneath the grand assembly hall. The monastery houses an exceptional library and a recently built multi-denominational gompa, reflecting the enduring vitality of Buddhism in Ladakh.

Day 5: Leh –nubra – Drive 145 Km
After an early breakfast, depart for Nubra Valley, driving across one of the world’s highest motorable passes — Khardung La (5,606 m). The route gradually ascends through a series of picturesque mountain villages, offering breathtaking views of Stok Kangri and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Descending from the pass, the first village you encounter is Khardung, followed by Khalsar — both large and prosperous settlements known for their lush groves of willow and poplar trees. The altitude here is slightly lower than Leh, ranging between 10,000 and 10,600 feet. Continuing further, you’ll reach the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra Rivers. From here, turn left and follow the Shyok River until you arrive at Diskit, the administrative center of Nubra Valley. Diskit Monastery Perched dramatically amidst the stark and barren landscape of Nubra, the Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest monastery in the region, standing at an altitude of 3,142 meters. Founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, it belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) order and is affiliated with Thiksey Monastery. The monastery’s Tibetan-style architecture houses exquisite frescoes, statues, and prayer halls. The highlight is the majestic statue of Cho Rinpoche (the Crowned Buddha), along with large prayer drums and images of guardian deities. From the top, one can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Nubra Valley — truly a sight to behold. Hunder Sand Dunes A short drive from Diskit takes you to Hunder, the last accessible point on this route. Hunder is renowned for its silver sand dunes, a surreal oasis set against the dramatic backdrop of snow-clad mountains. Located at an altitude of 3,200 meters, this cold desert is intersected by a gentle stream and surrounded by picturesque countryside. The dunes are home to the rare Bactrian (double-humped) camels, once used as pack animals along the ancient Silk Route, as well as Pashmina goats. Visitors can enjoy a camel safari across the dunes, evoking the charm and spirit of the old Central Asian trade caravans. After exploring Hunder, return to Diskit for a leisurely stroll through the village and local market.
Overnight: Camps in Nubra
Day 6: Nubra – Pangong (4250 Meters) Via Shyok River Road – 150 Kms – 7hrs.
After an early breakfast, depart for Pangong Lake, one of the highest and most breathtaking lakes in the world, situated at an altitude of 4,350 meters. This magnificent endorheic lake stretches over 12 kilometers, extending from India into Tibet, with nearly two-thirds of its expanse lying in the Tibetan region. Due to its high altitude, the temperature around Pangong ranges from –5°C to 10°C, and the lake completely freezes during the winter months despite its saline water. One of Pangong’s most fascinating features is its ever-changing hues — the water shifts from deep azure to light blue, green, and even grey at different times of the day, creating a truly mesmerizing spectacle. Only about 40% of the lake lies in India, while the remaining portion extends into Tibet (China).

The journey offers spectacular mountain vistas and ever-changing landscapes of the trans- Himalayan region. On the way, visit the renowned Hemis Monastery, beautifully nestled in a secluded valley south of the Indus River. Despite its remote location, Hemis holds immense spiritual and cultural significance. As the headquarters of the Drukpa (Red Hat) order, it oversees numerous monasteries across Ladakh — from the Indus to the Zanskar Valley, and from the Markha to the Sumdah Valley. Continue your drive to Leh and check in at the hotel upon arrival.

Continue to the Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, situated at an altitude of 3,600 meters and about 22 km from Leh. Nestled amidst the rugged Himalayan landscape, this sacred shrine was built in memory of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who is believed to have visited this region during his lifetime. A short drive ahead brings you to the famous Magnetic Hill, where the natural magnetic forces are said to be so strong that vehicles appear to move uphill even when left in neutral gear — a fascinating illusion that continues to amaze visitors. Proceed to Sangam, the spectacular confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers. Here, the emerald-green waters of the Indus, flowing from Tibet, meet the muddy blue currents of the Zanskar River from the Zanskar Valley — a truly mesmerizing sight. Continue to Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest monastic complexes in Ladakh, dating back to around 1000 AD. It was built by the renowned translator Rinchen Zangpo, who brought skilled Kashmiri artisans and woodcarvers to create its exquisite murals and sculptures — masterpieces that reflect the deep Indo-Tibetan artistic connection of that era. Finally, drive onward to Lamayuru Monastery, is one of the oldest and most picturesque monasteries in Ladakh. Believed to have been founded in the 10th century by the Indian scholar Naropa, Lamayuru belongs to the Drikung Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism and once housed over 400 monks. Often referred to as the “Moonland of Ladakh” due to its unique, otherworldly landscape of eroded cliffs and unusual rock formations, Lamayuru exudes an ancient mystique.
