Day 13: Shillong – Day Trip To Cherrapunjee (56 Kms / 2 Hrs)
After breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to Cherrapunji—locally known
as Sohra—famed for receiving the highest average annual rainfall in the world
(around 11,000 mm). The drive itself is a scenic journey through deep gorges,
rolling hills, and lush tropical vegetation.
Cherrapunji is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, roaring waterfalls, and
mysterious limestone caves. En route, take a detour to the Mawphlang Sacred
Grove—an ancient forest preserved by the Khasi tribe. This sacred grove is a
sanctuary where nothing may be removed—not a single leaf or stone—and is
home to rare, medicinal, and endemic plant species, reflecting the deep
ecological wisdom of the local community.
Continue to the Garden of Caves, a hidden gem nestled within a forest. This
enchanting site features a series of natural caves, waterfalls, and intriguing
rock formations. The interplay of sunlight, water, and greenery creates a
serene and magical ambiance at every turn.
One of the highlights of the day is a visit to Nohkalikai Falls, plunging
dramatically from a height of 1,115 feet—making it one of the tallest
waterfalls in India. The falls are steeped in local legend, adding a mystical layer
to the already awe-inspiring view from the cliffside viewpoint.
In the late afternoon, drive back to Shillong. Please note: during the dry
season, some waterfalls may have reduced flow or may temporarily dry up.
